Yakima, WA – On Wednesday, March 14th, Yakima Valley Libraries will host Ingrid Walker, PhD, at
the Yakima Central Library for a presentation and discussion about her book, “High: Drugs, Desire,
and a Nation of Users.”
This is the latest event in the library’s “Authors Out Loud” spring author series.
Dr. Walker is a professor of American Studies, Media and Culture at the University of WashingtonTacoma,
where her research focuses on contemporary American culture, with a particular emphasis
on understanding the systems that create social inequities in the United States, and what we can do
to change them.
In her book and presentation, Walker asks a fundamental question about drug policy and social
norms in the United States: Why do we endorse the use of some drugs while criminalizing the use of
others? She contends that this is an illogical separation that shapes public policy, the justice system,
research, social services, and healthcare in ways that affect all Americans.
“Dr. Walker’s book is a unique contribution to the ongoing political, cultural and social discussion
about drug use and drug policy here in our community, and across the nation,” said Krystal Corbray,
programming and marketing librarian. “We’re pleased to host her here in Yakima, and think her
presentation will be a thought-provoking platform for learning and constructive discussion.”
