Yakima Valley Libraries to Support PBS’s: The Great American Read!

Yakima, WA – Does America have a favorite book? PBS certainly thinks so! With The Great American Read project, PBS is on a mission to discover America’s most-loved novel, and Yakima Valley Libraries is supporting the endeavor with information and resources available to patrons here in the Yakima Valley.

According to PBS, “The Great American Read is an eight-part [documentary] series that explores and celebrates the power of reading, told through the prism of America’s 100 best-loved novels (as chosen in a national survey). It investigates how and why writers create their fictional worlds, how we as readers are affected by these stories, and what these 100 different books have to say about our diverse nation and our shared human experience.”

The list of all 100 titles is available on the PBS website, but patrons are also encouraged to visit the Yakima Valley Libraries website where they’ll find a complete book list of the Great American Read titles available from Yakima Valley Libraries. The books are available in a variety of formats, including print, audio, or as a digital download for patrons’ convenience.

In addition, beginning in July 2018, patrons will be able to collect a series of bookmarks available in their local community library, which will do double-duty as a checklist of all 100 books. Those who collect all five bookmarks will have a complete set of the 100 titles, where they can easily track which titles they have read and which they haven’t.

Finally, patrons are encouraged to visit The Great American Read site to vote for their favorite title from the Top 100 list; every vote collected will help PBS determine America’s most-loved novel, which will be announced in November 2018. PBS is also seeking stories from book lovers, nationwide, who have been impacted by any of the books on the Top 100 list. Stories can be shared via text, audio, video or social media.
