Celebrate Día with us!

El día de los niños/El día de los libros (Children’s Day/Book Day), commonly known as Día, is a celebration every day of children, families, and reading that culminates yearly on April 30.

Día is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. It is a year-round commitment to connecting children and their families with diverse books, languages, and cultures.

To celebrate Día, Yakima Valley Libraries will host two events – one at Sunnyside Library on Saturday, April 26 from 11am-2pm and the other at Yakima Central Library on Wednesday, April 30 from 4-6pm. Both events are free and open to the public.

Children are invited to participate in fun activities such as scavenger hunts, one-page plays, tongue twisters, a Día walk/musical chairs game with prizes, drawing stations, face painting (at Sunnyside Library), caricatures (at Yakima Central Library), balloon animals, and book giveaways.

The events will also honor Beverly Cleary, the award-winning children’s author who once worked as a children’s librarian at the Yakima Library from 1939 to 1940. Her empathy for children struggling to find books with relatable characters inspired her writing career, making her legacy particularly meaningful for this celebration of children and literacy.
